Wakefield is a scenic town located 10 miles north of Boston located at the intersection of Interstate 93 and Interstate 95/128. The town is easily accessible by commuter rail from Boston.
Formerly part of Reading, in 1868 the town of Wakefield received its name after Cyrus Wakefield. After Mr. Wakefield's arrival in 1851 he built two new successful industries: The Boston and Maine Foundry Company and Wakefield Rattan Company. This brought jobs and business to the area. He generously donated land and money for a new town hall and in turn the town voted to change its name to Wakefield, Massachusetts.
One of the oldest and largest manufacturers of flying model airplane toys in the world resides in Wakefield. It also homes the oldest inland yacht club on Lake Quannapowitt. During the warmer months many resident can enjoy a day of fishing, boating or windsurfing on the lake. Wakefield is also known for is strong local sports fan base. The town offers a year round sports program for youth.
