Town of Norwood
Norwood was formerly part of Dedham and officially formed in 1872. In its early days Native Americans used the town as a hunting ground. Once settled by Ezra Morse a sawmill was built and mainly farmers migrated to the area. During the Revolutionary War, Captain Aaron Guild of Norwood led a minutemen company to fight and eventually chase the Redcoats back to Boston. A memorial stone proudly stands in the town’s square.
The 50’s and 60’s were a period of outstanding growth for the town of Norwood. Dealerships went up, now known as the “Automile”, Polaroid added to the manufacturing capacity and housing developments went up for the elderly and veterans. Mid-decade saw the completion of Route 95, which provided third route parallel to Routes 1 and 1A.
Present day, Norwood continues its tradition of being a community with a multitude of activities for its youth. After recently renovating fields there is now an extensive youth soccer and basketball program. Shopping centers, mini malls and restaurants are located along Route 1.
